Turtleback Mountain South Trailhead – San Juan County Land Bank

A rewarding trail with panoramic views.

1. 360° Summit Views

Turtlehead Summit offers one of the best panoramic views on the island — looking out over West Sound, Mount Constitution, the Canadian Gulf Islands, and on clear days, even the Olympic Mountains. It’s a spectacular reward for reaching the top.

2. Moderate-to-Challenging Hike

The full out-and-back is about 7.5 miles and moderately strenuous — ideal for active guests looking to spend a half to full day immersed in nature. It’s a great “middle-tier” adventure: challenging, but doable for most able-bodied hikers.

3. Wildlife & Wildflowers

In spring and early summer, the trail is lined with native wildflowers. Guests often see hawks, eagles, deer, and sometimes even wild turkeys. It’s a nature-lover’s dream.

4. Peaceful and Uncrowded

Turtleback Mountain is less visited than Moran State Park, so the trail is serene and uncrowded — great for guests who want a more private, reflective experience.

5. Well-Maintained Trail System

The trail is part of the San Juan Preservation Trust and is well-marked with multiple loop and connector options. Maps at the trailhead make it easy to navigate.

6. Great for Couples or Small Groups

The views and peaceful setting make this hike ideal for couples looking for a memorable day outdoors, or small friend groups seeking a quiet, shared challenge.

North Beach Public Access

Beautiful view and plenty of parking. The beach is only about 40 feet wide, I’m guessing, with “No trespassing” signs on either side of it, but there’s a place to sit and enjoy the view, and there was no one else there, which my favorite feature of any scenic spot.

Excellent trail, not to hard (fairly level), not to long (about 30 mins. both ways), beautiful walk. Make sure to enjoy the beach too.
